NTR's four-part documentary series, "The Water is Coming!" hosted by Winfried Baijens, revisits the 70th anniversary of the Dutch North Sea Flood. Through historical footage and eyewitness accounts, it explores the disaster's progression, the prior lack of readiness, and the lessons learned. Baijens, a native of Zeeland, guides us through history and the future, prompting us to ponder whether we've truly absorbed those lessons.
As we began developing the app, we encountered a unique timing challenge. Typically, the visual language and design of a documentary are finalized quite late in the production process—too late for us to effectively integrate these elements into the app. To ensure coherence between the app and the documentary, we decided to take on the visual design of the documentary as well. This proactive approach allowed us to align the app's design seamlessly with the visual style of the series, ensuring a unified and immersive user experience.
This app was primarily developed using Flutter, designed to be energy-efficient while tracking user location in the background, such as during a walk. Integrating this capability with augmented reality presented a significant technical challenge. To address this, we developed a custom framework that merges Flutter with Unity 3D, allowing us to leverage the strengths of both platforms to their fullest potential. For the augmented reality component, we utilized Google Geospatial services to precisely align the visual experiences with the exact locations where historical events occurred. This integration ensures that users receive a seamless and contextually enriched virtual experience, deeply rooted in the real-world settings of past events.
